Campaign Response for Boats & VAT

Thank you for contacting me about the payment of VAT on boats returning to the UK after the end of the transition period.

I am aware that the Royal Yachting Association has been campaigning for a three-year extension to returned goods relief, and more recently of reports in the Financial Times of a potential year-long delay to the date by which British boats would have to return to the UK to avoid paying VAT twice.

I understand your frustration with this situation. I know that discussions are ongoing and I will ensure that my Ministerial colleagues are aware of your concerns.

More broadly, the UK is leaving the EU’s customs union at the end of the transition period on 31 December. This will occur regardless of whether an agreement on a future relationship is reached with the EU. There will necessarily be changes to customs procedures but it is important that these are communicated clearly and in good time.

Thank you again for taking the time to contact me.
