Campaign Response for the Future of the Monarchy

Thank you for contacting me about the future of the monarchy.

I have the greatest respect for HM The Queen. She has dedicated her life to the UK and the Commonwealth and has been steadfast in her commitment to public service. Next year will mark the 70th anniversary of The Queen’s accession to the throne and I know that her Platinum Jubilee will be a source of great happiness and celebration for many people in this country and around the world.

The Queen’s work with charities and voluntary organisations is well documented and she is Royal Patron or President of over 600 charities, military associations, professional bodies and public service organisations. Her contribution has been invaluable in supporting and recognising the work of these groups.

The Queen, as Sovereign, also plays a significant role as Head of State of 16 realms plus the UK. Although she has no political role as Sovereign, The Queen undertakes constitutional and representational duties which have developed over a thousand years of history. This includes being present at the State Opening of Parliament and formally assenting to legislation. The Queen also serves as Supreme Governor of the Church of England.

The monarchy remains an extremely popular institution in the UK with the majority of Britons in favour of retaining it in the future and, as such, I do not support calls for a referendum on the issue or for the UK to abolish the monarchy. I am wholly in favour of our monarchy.

Thank you again for taking the time to contact me.

Kind Regards,

Sally-Ann Hart MP
