As I write this column, I am contemplating the events of the past year both in Parliament and in the real world; events which have affected all of us in many different ways.
We watched in horror Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the trauma caused; the lives and homes lost. We have seen the huge generosity of the British people - donating food, money and items of need – and offering their love and their homes to many Ukrainian women and children, providing sanctuary.
On the home front, we continue to experience the impact of Russia’s invasion following the global pandemic that brought so many countries to their knees socially and economically. We all feel the bite of the resulting rise in energy and food costs, higher inflation and interest rates. We are seeing many public sector workers calling for higher wages and striking when their demands are unable to be met in all our interests.
In Parliament, we have seen three prime ministers and numerous changes in ministers. Everywhere, I feel the anger, disappointment, resentment and frustration of colleagues and the general public. It is hard not to feel anxious for 2023.
Nevertheless, in the face of adversity, we find our strength and resilience. As a country and as individuals we have faced crises over the past three years unlike those we have faced in the past. It is difficult to believe that we can find a way through, but we can, and we will.
Whilst we cannot control global events, as your MP, I work with my colleagues every day to improve the way we respond to the challenges facing our country and I believe there is reason to take hope for 2023. Our new Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, has taken difficult steps to control the crisis and will set out a broader agenda in the New Year focusing on economic repair; reform of our public services to ensure that they actually deliver for the British people; and improving life for the next generation by providing the best possible education and opportunities that children and adults need to succeed.
No matter how hard this year has been it is coming to an end. With the New Year there is hope and with hope, together we can face whatever lies ahead.
