STATEMENT - Latest Update on Bulverhythe Sewer Pipe Incident
Over the last few days, since the incident on Friday, I have been kept up to date with reports from Southern Water on the ongoing situation with the burst sewer pipe at Bulverhythe.
Work is still ongoing at the site, but considerable progress has been made in repairing the pipe and getting the situation back under control.
This has clearly been a distressing situation for many people, and the closure of the beaches in the area has been a necessary response to the burst pipe owing to the pollution of the local sea water.
At present the advice is still not to go into the water along the Pelham or St Leonards beaches owing to the risk of reduced water quality.
I know that many residents, especially those in the immediate area and the owners of beach huts nearby, will be deeply concerned and worried about this situation. I understand that Southern Water and the Environment Agency are still on location and will be supporting those residents impacted by this.
I will continue to seek and receive updates on the situation and ensure going forwards I work with relevant agencies so we can find long-term solutions so that critical infrastructure, like sewer pipes, are robust and fit for purpose.
